The waters murmur as the lilies woo,
There’s duty done; there’s duty yet to do …
Had I great Nature’s laws e’er disobeyed,
My duty shirked, my mission heeded not;
But with such sweet seductive flowers stayed,
In such a fair and fascinating spot,
The mire of idleness would soon have made
A stagnant pool, a foul polluted blot:
No! let me gladden thee and others too,
When duty’s done, there’s duty yet to do.”

Issue: 78:9 Mar. 06, 2013
Theme: Pathos

“Marveling at the sight of an eye reflecting the sunlight at my beach in West Palm Beach Florida. The eye is where our emotion and humanness flows. The blind mans humanness — his depravity — meets Jesus divinity in John 9 — the blind man responds to the disbelieving Pharisees: Why this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes.”

What was more surprising than the sight itself was the fact that no one around seemed to think it was odd. The light soon changed and he biked off with his baggage.

Issue: 77:8 Feb. 22, 2012
Theme: Savory
Winner: Josh Merrill
“This image was captured on my recent road trip to Alaska. A mother grizzly and her two-year-old cub arrived at the creek. The cub began to fish. Though it was an awkward attempt, he didn’t give up and eventually managed to grasp tightly to an aging silver salmon that was bigger than his head. After gnawing on this savory salmon for a few minutes the mother grizzly soon joined in and took over the consumption of this tasty treat.”
